Step 2: Get a cardboard box (cereal or snack box).
Step 3: Cut out a square or rectangle from the box. This will be used as your surface or base to glue smaller pieces of cardboard onto for your collagraph. Save the scraps.
Step 4: With the scraps, cut out a variety of geometric and organic shapes. Then arrange the shapes onto the square or rectangle surface/base. Once you arrange them into a design of your choice, glue them down. Let the glue dry before moving on to step 5.
Step 5: Now it's time for the texture rubbing. Take a sheet of paper and place it on top of your collagraph (cardboard surface/base). Then use the flat side (not the tip) of a crayon (make sure the crayon wrapper is removed) and rub onto the paper. Make sure one hand is holding the paper, while the other hand is rubbing with the crayon. You will see your design appear onto the paper with the crayon.
Step 6: If you would like to outline the crayon rubbing design with a washable marker onto the paper. Then dip a paint brush (can also substitute a Q-tip or a cotton ball) into water and paint onto the marker area turning it into watercolor paint.
Step 7: Save your cardboard collagraph for week 4. We'll be using it for a printmaking project.
Week 3 Alternative Art Project:
Shape Design using geometric and organic shapes.
(If you don't have the materials for doing week 3, you can do this project as another option.)
You can create this using paper and any drawing materials or you can use any digital drawing program or app of your choice. For the project, create a drawing using a variety of geometric and organic shapes. The overall design can be abstract (where it doesn't have to look like something you recognize) or it can have a theme (example: cityscape or nature scene). Add color to it using your choice of materials.
